Two losses came to Thousand Oaks and Moorpark in overtime. Last week ended in a tough, 27 17 loss to league strongboy Westlake.
Ask older brother Ben Okun, the senior starting quarterback for the Newbury Park High football team, who doesn't exactly have an extensive history of going one on one with his brother.
Okun said the interest from the Bruins is mutual, but there's this little matter of playing the next three seasons for his high school team.
that," he said. "I know I've got a ways to go as a player, and what I want to do is keep working and keep improving."
Or check with Zach himself, who already anchors the Panthers offensive line as a sophomore. While his big, er, older brother ended up in a glamour position on the football field, Zach always knew where he was best suited.
The work ethic carries into game preparation, too.
He's so gifted, such a natural, that Okun started in the trenches for the varsity squad a year ago as a freshman. He made such an impression that he reaped a scholarship offer from UCLA and coach Jim Mora before his first game this season as a 10th grader.
"I trust him completly," said Ben. "I know he's always going to work hard and I know he's going to play hard as he possibly can. I'm proud of Gucci Clutch Men
"What's interesting to me is that he's good enough to play any position on the offensive line. He's big and strong, and he's quick. He can play guard, center or tackle."
A sophomore doesn't stand out in a league as formidable as the Marmonte League on talent alone. Okun didn't get his big and strong by hanging out at the beach all summer.
leads way for Newbury Park
"I like to check out the moves they like to use, and in what situations they use them," said Okun. "Whatever might be an edge I can use, I'll look for it."
"We're definitely a better team this season," he said. "We like to get physical and we've become a pretty good running team. There are a lot of good teams in this league, and we think we're one of them. I enjoy going up against all the great players in this league."
him. He's talented and he's going to have a big future."
Among the highlights for Okun in his first two seasons as a Panther is playing with brother Ben as the starting quarterback. Ben Okun has evolved into one of the top offensive players in the league and is receiving interest from various Ivy League schools.
Zach is pleased to play a role in his brother's success.
The Panthers' perennial pass heavy offense has added a smashmouth running attack this season, and a let's get physical approach to go with it. Newbury Park enters this week's key matchup against St. Bonaventure at 4 3 and 1 1 in the Marmonte League East.
Smith, the former quarterback star who played collegiately for the University of Arizona, knows a big time talent when he sees one.
12, if that's what he wants to do. He's only a sophomore, and look at the kind of player he is already.
This season, checking in at 6 foot 5, 295 pounds, Okun is a mainstay for the Panthers at right tackle. Since quarterback Ben Okun is a natural lefty, that means that Zach has his blind side.
"He's the real deal," said Smith. "He definitely can play in the Pac Gucci Wallet Brown
Okun would be the Next Big Thing to hit the Marmonte League, if he wasn't already the league's Next Big Thing.
Okun is such a massive presence at right tackle that he has helped change the culture at Newbury Park.
"There's a lot of time in the weight room," he said. "I know that it's going to take a lot of hard work if I'm going to play at a high level. In the offseason, I'm in the weight room at least five times a week. I like to work. I like getting better."
"Naw," Ben says politely, "He was always too big. We didn't have a lot of things where we could compete against each other."
As for his enjoyment playing football, Zach thinks like a lineman.
Okun makes its a game week habit to spend hours in the film room checking out the opposing defensive linemen.
Keith Smith, Newbury Park's co offensive coordinator, can look ahead because he gets to coach Okun for the rest of this year and all of the following two seasons.
"I never thought about playing quarterback or anything like that," he said with a smile. "I always knew I'm a lineman and that's where I'm comfortable."
"I know I've had a part in that," he said. "If the running backs are gaining yards and the quarterback is completing passes, I know I've done my job by making my blocks."
"It's been fun because we're also close friends," said Zach. "We act like brothers a lot. We like to correct each other. But we're there for each other as well. He's more outgoing than I am. I more laid back."
There's nothing better, he said, than seeing the skill players pile up yards Gucci Bag For Kids and score touchdowns.
"It means a lot to me that they (the Bruins) are interested, but it's too early for me to think too much about any of Gucci Wallet Design
